It's a website where you can search for a free place to sleep, in a house. The owners like to tell you all about their country. They will take you to nice hangouts, where you normally wouldn't know of.
We tried Couchsurfing for the first time in New Zealand, and met a dutch girl, who was living there for 10 years already. It was a really good experience, and after that we also did some couchsurfing in South America, which was amazing. We met all these really sweet people. Most of the time we had our own bedroom, sometimes even with a bathroom as well! Really amazing. Because basically it's just a couch, on which you'll sleep. It's a cheap (free) way to sleep in a country, although of course, it's nice if you cook for them or take a small present. If it's something from your own country it will be appreciated even more. Take some 'drop' for example, a dutch sweet. Or you can take clogs. They'll love it!
One of the mothers from the families where we stayed, told me she once got a pair of clogs, but they broke, so after our trip, i sent her some clogs. She was so happy!
In Colombia our host gave us all kinds of Colombian fruit to try. So sweet! It was really tasty.
It's important to contact a host which has some references, to be on the safe side. And a picture of the person is handy, as well as a complete profile. If you have some things in common it's the best. They will bring you to places that are not so touristy, so it will be a great experience.
